What AWS Support really costs

At AWS, support is not a fixed fee but a percentage of usage that quietly grows as the bill grows. The overhaul of the support plans at the end of 2025 shifted that calculation: Business Support+ replaces the old Business Support, and the Enterprise minimum drops from USD 15,000 to USD 5,000. That makes the question of which plan fits which account structure interesting again, and the calculator in the article lets you work it through with your own numbers.

AWS Support is one of those items that tend to be overlooked on the bill, because it does not feel like a service you actively book, but like something that simply comes with it. That is exactly why it surprises you later: in the paid plans, support is not a fixed fee but a percentage of monthly usage. When AWS costs grow, the support line quietly grows with them, without anyone having made a decision.

At the end of 2025 AWS restructured its support plans, and that is worth a look, because older articles and gut feelings now partly carry the wrong numbers. We go through the four tiers, work through the tiered rates concretely with an interactive calculator, and finally look at what the new structure not only makes more expensive, but also makes possible.

The four support tiers

Every AWS customer has Basic Support for free. It covers account and billing questions, service quotas and the basic health checks, but no technical support for your own workloads. For a first account that is often enough, but as soon as real load runs on it, the missing response time becomes a risk.

Above that, Developer Support was long the low-cost entry point with technical support during business hours. This tier is being phased out: AWS discontinues Developer Support on 1 January 2027. Anyone planning from scratch today should no longer aim for it, but look straight at the next tier.

That next tier is now called Business Support+ and replaces the previous Business Support, which also ends on 1 January 2027. Business Support+ brings round-the-clock access to Cloud Support Engineers by phone, web and chat, a response time of 30 minutes for critical cases, twice as fast as with the old Business Support, more than 500 Trusted Advisor checks, the Support API and, new, AI-assisted, context-aware answers. The minimum is USD 29 per month and account, considerably lower than the USD 100 many remember from the old Business Support.

Enterprise Support is the top regular tier and includes everything from Business Support+, plus a dedicated Technical Account Manager, a response time of up to 15 minutes for critical cases, access to AWS Security Incident Response and strategic reviews. In the restructuring, the monthly minimum was lowered from USD 15,000 to USD 5,000, which puts the tier within reach of much smaller organisations than before.

Business Support+: the 10 per cent tiers

Business Support+ is billed per account, and the fee for each account is the higher of two amounts: the minimum of USD 29 or a percentage-based tiered rate on the usage of exactly that account. The tiers are progressive, so higher usage is calculated in bands rather than with a single rate on the whole sum. Because every account runs through its own tiers and starts at the expensive first band, it makes a big difference whether the same usage sits on one account or is spread across many.

That is exactly why the calculator asks for individual accounts rather than just a total. Enter your accounts with their usage, and for the rest that you do not want to list individually, use the catch-all account with the slider. Both plans are calculated from the same input, so you can see straight away which one is cheaper for your account structure.

AWS Support cost calculator

Enter your accounts with their monthly AWS spend. Both plans are calculated from it at once, because Business Support+ charges per account and Enterprise aggregates across all accounts.

Indicative values based on public AWS Support pricing (as of 2026). For Business Support+, each account is charged the higher of the minimum fee and the tier fee; for Enterprise, the higher of the minimum fee and the tier fee on total spend. The actual bill depends on your specific usage and the services excluded from support.

The important words with Business Support+ are “per account”. AWS Organizations does not pool the support fee; every account pays its own minimum and its own tiers. Anyone who gives many small accounts Business Support+ quickly pays a sum of minimum fees out of all proportion to the actual need for support. This is where the first optimisation question comes up: which account really needs technical support, and which one can make do with Basic? How to split accounts sensibly in the first place is covered in depth in the article Splitting AWS accounts sensibly.

Enterprise Support: the lowered minimum

Enterprise Support is calculated differently, namely aggregated across all accounts in the organisation that have booked the plan. Instead of many small minimums there is one shared minimum of USD 5,000 and one shared set of tiers on total usage. For organisations with many accounts, this is not only a question of price but also of billing, because the support fee comes together in one number instead of being spread across dozens of bills. In the calculator above, the Enterprise figure sits right next to the one for Business Support+, because both come from the same accounts you entered. If you move the same total from many individual accounts to a few, you can see the Business line fall and approach Enterprise.

In the past the threshold was clear: Enterprise Support only made financial sense for very large environments, because the minimum was USD 15,000. With the minimum lowered to USD 5,000, that calculation shifts downwards. An organisation that previously got by with many Business Support+ accounts may now find itself earlier in the position where an aggregated Enterprise plan is both cheaper and stronger. That is the point at which the restructuring does not just make things more expensive, but opens something up.

What this makes possible

The lower Enterprise entry point means that a dedicated Technical Account Manager, 15-minute response times and access to AWS Security Incident Response are no longer reserved for large corporations. A growing company can reach this level of quality before it has the size of a corporation, and so bring reliable response times and real security support into operations earlier.

The AI-assisted answers in Business Support+ also change how support feels day to day. Instead of opening every case through a ticket, you get context-aware help at the moment of the question, which moves support closer to the work. That fits exactly the picture we describe elsewhere, namely that information should be available where the work happens, not in a separate tool you first have to open.

The real lever, however, lies in treating support costs as something you can steer at all. Anyone who knows their AWS usage per account and understands the tiers can decide consciously which accounts need which plan, instead of accepting support as an unavoidable surcharge. That takes a reliable view of your own costs, and that is exactly where the work begins that turns the support plan from an accidental line item into a decision.

The prices and percentages in this article reflect the public state after the restructuring at the end of 2025. AWS rarely changes support prices, but before you base a concrete decision on them, it is worth checking the current AWS Support pricing page, because the exact band limits can vary by region and plan.

Frequently asked questions

What does AWS Business Support cost?

Business Support+ is the higher of two amounts: a minimum of USD 29 per month and account, or a percentage-based tiered rate on monthly usage that starts at 10 per cent for the first band and falls as usage rises. Each account is billed separately.

What does AWS Enterprise Support cost?

Since the restructuring at the end of 2025, Enterprise Support has a minimum of USD 5,000 per month, down from 15,000. Above that, a percentage-based tiered rate applies to usage aggregated across all accounts, likewise starting at 10 per cent and falling with volume.

Is the USD 15,000 minimum for Enterprise still charged?

No. AWS has lowered the Enterprise minimum to USD 5,000 per month. The former value of USD 15,000 no longer applies, which puts Enterprise Support within reach of much smaller organisations.

What is the difference between Business Support and Business Support+?

Business Support+ is the successor to the previous Business Support, which ends on 1 January 2027. It adds AI-assisted, context-aware answers to the familiar scope and lowers the minimum from USD 100 to USD 29 per account.

Can I get 24/7 support without Enterprise pricing?

Yes. Round-the-clock access to Cloud Support Engineers is already part of Business Support+ and does not require an Enterprise plan. Enterprise adds the dedicated Technical Account Manager, 15-minute response and Security Incident Response on top.

Is Developer Support being discontinued?

Yes, Developer Support ends on 1 January 2027. Existing customers can keep using it until then or switch to Business Support+ at any time. For new plans, Business Support+ is the more sensible target tier.
